EASLEY—An October benefit has been set to help a local first responder with the financial burdens of battling cancer.
Easley Firefighter Lonnie Joe Lesley has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, and a BBQ Fundraiser to aid the long-time public servant is set for Oct. 12.
“There have been so many unexpected bills that are piling up for that family,” Easley Fire Chief Butch Womack said. “This is something we can do to try to help with that.”
Womack said Lesley has become more like a family member over the years.
“Firefighters are more than just firefighters,” Womack said. “They mend together like a family, and Lonnie has grown to be more like a family member and a counselor for some of the younger ones.”
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pope Field Park in Easley and will feature live entertainment, giveaways and a Bike Raffle Run & Cruise-In.
Registration for the Bike Raffle Run will begin at 9 a.m. at Pope Field Park.
Cost will be $15 per bike and $10 per rider.
Womack said the benefit will go to help Lesley and his family.
“The family has come up with several options of things they’re trying to do to help him out and we’re just behind him 100 percent,” Womack said. “Whatever we can do to help, we’ll be there to assist.”
“Lonnie has been with the fire department for 23 years and he’s more than a firefighter,” he said.
