PIEDMONT – A breakout performance from Wren High’s Kelly Bryant has the Hurricanes starting region play 1-0.

Bryant led the Wren High football team to its first region win over Emerald with 435 passing yards, four touchdowns and 99 rushing yards in the 49-28 victory.

“It’s simply amazing,” Wren coach Jeff Tate said of Bryant. “He makes plays. He has a great will and desire to keep a play alive and find people. He’s very special.”

Wren managed to build a seven point advantage going into the half, leading by a score of 21-14 to start the third quarter. It was then the Hurricanes turned on the gas.

The Hurricanes used a second half surge to slide past Emerald, holding off any comeback attempt on their way to victory.

“We had a lot of people contribute and that’s what has to happen for your team to be successful,” Tate said. “We’re proud of all (these) guys.”

Tate said his Hurricanes beat a good Emerald team, who he thinks will present some problems for teams in the region.

“That’s a good football team that we were very fortunate to beat,” Tate said. “They’ve got athletes everywhere. They’re tough and they’re going to win some more ball games.”

“We needed guys to make plays for us and they did,” Tate said. “They stepped up.”

Wren is now 3-1 on the season, riding a three-game win streak into this Friday’s matchup with Seneca.

“We’ve had some really good wins,” Tate said. “Hopefully going forward we can have some better showings and find a way to start the region on top.”

Kickoff against Seneca is set for 7:30 p.m. in Piedmont.
