CENTRAL – Southern Wesleyan University has released it fine arts calendar for spring and it’s sure to have something for everyone.
Unless otherwise noted, admission is free, no ticket required, and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, events are held in Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. Call 864-644-5404 for more information.
Here is a look at upcoming events:
Upper Region High School Honor Choir Concert
After rehearsing Thursday evening and all day Friday with SWU’s director of choral activities, Dr. Don R. Campbell, the South Carolina Upper Region Honor Choir will present a program highlighting the great work they have done. For more than 200 students, it is the culmination of not only these two days, but also the preparation that has taken place in their own high schools by their choral instructors. SWU Professor Jane Dill is the accompanist for the choir. When: 7 p.m. Jan. 24.
“What We Bring to Art” – Robert Colby, Ph.D.
Despite the popular belief that fine art is reserved for the elite few who collect it or those who frequently visit museums and galleries, art is a valuable resource for reflecting on what is important in our lives. Art curator and consultant Rob Colby will guide this discussion of Christian art, where participants will learn about the works and their respective cultures and contexts, share their visual observations, and examine what these images can mean to them. The discussion will be held in Founders Hall on the lower level of the University Dining Commons. When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3.
“Of Ebony Embers – Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance”
A chamber music theatre work for actor and trio (cello, piano & percussion) will celebrate the lives of the great African-American poets Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay as seen through the eyes of the great muralist and painter Aaron Douglas. The musical score includes works by jazz giants Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus as well as concert music by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker. When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17.
SWU Jazz Invitational
The Southern Wesleyan University Jazz Invitational will feature many of the Upstate’s finest middle school, high school and collegiate jazz bands on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. This fun and relaxing program will conclude with SWU’s own jazz band. When: 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20.
Musica Ecclesia is a choir festival that brings together area church choirs on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. It is an opportunity for the singers and congregations to come together to celebrate Christian unity. Each choir presents favorite anthems and then joins the other choirs, including the SWU Concert Choir, in singing a closing anthem. When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21.
SWU Jazz and Wind Ensembles
Under the direction of Prof. Greg Day, director of instrumental activities, Southern Wesleyan University’s Wind Ensemble will join the SWU Jazz Ensemble in a varied program of concert and sacred works that will delight listeners of all ages Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The event features students from Southern Wesleyan University as well as area students who have auditioned to be part of the group. When: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25.
March 21-22, 7:30 p.m.; March 28, 7:30 p.m.; March 29, 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. | “Narnia”
This year’s SWU student production will take you on a journey with the four Pevensie children through the wardrobe to visit the magical land of Narnia. This family musical is based on the well-loved children’s book, “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” and features songs such as “You Can’t Imagine,” “Turkish Delight,” and “Deep Magic.” The musical will be held in Folger Auditorium. Call 864-644-5191 for ticket information. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for non-SWU students and seniors; and $5 for children under 12. SWU students are admitted free.
Music Majors Formal Recital
Southern Wesleyan University music majors are featured in the Music Majors Formal Recital April 4 at 4:30 p.m. The event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. When: 4:30 p.m. April 4.
Come listen to an afternoon of inspirational gospel music by some of the area’s finest gospel choirs April 13 from 1-5 p.m. The Gospel Extravaganza will be held in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center and admission is free. This event is a part of a week-long area festival, The Clemson Area Blues Festival. When: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 13.
Music Majors Honors Recital
Selected Southern Wesleyan University music majors are featured in the Music Majors Honors Recital April 15 at 7:30 p.m. The event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. SWU Concert Choir “Pops” Concert
The Southern Wesleyan University “Pops” Concert is back! Sandwiched between staged medleys of “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables,” soloists, duets and small groups will perform many of your favorite Broadway melodies. It will be an evening perfect for the end of the semester. The event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. When: 7:30 p.m. April 26.
SWU Jazz and Wind Ensembles
The Jazz and Wind ensembles join forces at the end of the semester to delight the audience with a wide variety of sacred and secular works. The ensembles will help you find “your niche” and won’t leave you unsatisfied. The event is part of university’s Fine Art Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the campus in Central.
