CLEMSON – Southern Wesleyan track and field competed in their first meet of the season and first meet in program history Feb. 1 at Clemson University’s Bob Pollock Classic.
The Warriors turned in solid times including some that rank in the Top 10 on the NCCAA performance list so far this year. Jhante McMillan qualified for NCCAA Nationals in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.67, good for third place after posting a 8.73 time and a fourth place finish in the prelims. McMillan also qualified in the 200m with a time of 23.45 as did Malek Martin with a 23.77.
The women’s 4x400 team of Jess Maggio, Logan Thiel, Lavornne Taylor and Olivia Bush posted a top five time in the NCCAA this year at 4:07.17, which was good for fifth at the meet. That time was alos good enough to qualify for NCCAA Nationals as well.
Three of the four runners from the 4x400 team found some success in their own individual races. Olivia Bush and Jess Maggio each qualified for the NCCAA National Championship in the 60m hurdles with times of 9.71 and 9.30 respectively. Maggio also qualified in the 60m dash with a time of 8.11. Logan Thiel also qualified in the 200m with a time of 26.48.
Lavornne Taylor posted a time of 1:02.23 in the 400m, good enough to qualify for NCCAA Nationals as well.
Nick Shear won the 3000m race with a time of 9:56.29, over eight seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Robert Gwinn took third in the race with a time of 10:09.54.
Katrina Gabrell highlighted the women’s field events with a qualifying jump of 11.44m in the triple jump. Leeann Gibson just missed on her qualifying distance in the shot put, coming in at 10.66m, just 0.01m short of the standard.
The Warriors travel to Boone, N.C., next weekend to take part in the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by Appalachian State.
