PICKENS – Pickens County 4-H is in need of club leaders for the Woodworking Club, Air Rifle Club and Small Animal (dog/cat) Club or Veterinary Club. Clubs have to meet at least once a month.
Club leaders must complete a volunteer application, be at least 21 years old, complete a background and reference check and complete 4-H training to include Child Abuse Prevention, 4-H Volunteer Training, CPR and Driver’s Training. Club leaders who complete the driver’s training usually see a reduction in vehicle insurance.
Small Garden Project
Current 4-H members need to get registration completed and the $10 fee to the Pickens County 4-H office by April 29. The fee includes soil samples, seed packs and a record book. Gardens should be planted by May 9. Books recording the garden’s progress have to be turned in by Aug. 14. Non 4-H members can contact their local 4-H office to register.
Junior Garden Club
This is an afterschool garden club where kids learn the basics of gardening through fun and exciting hand-on activities. Participants will discover the secrets of soil and composting, and meet some wiggly worms. They also will plant veggies and flower seeds, tend to the seedlings and later transplant them into the Children’s Garden.
Every class will sample fresh veggies and explore the different ways to prepare and enjoy them. Participants also will take home some seeds and seedlings to start a garden of their own at home. Participants who are present at all meetings will receive a 4-H T-shirt and certification as a SC Botanical Garden Junior Gardener. The club meeting dates are April 7, April 14, April 21, April 28, May 5, May 12 and May 19.
