LIBERTY – The wait is finally over for the Red Devil faithful.
After losing a majority of its games by a seven-point margin or less, the Liberty High football team snagged its first win over Blacksburg Friday night.
The Red Devils finally had things go their way, cruising to an easy 51-22 victory in a crucial region showdown.
Both teams were 0-6 prior to Friday night’s game.
Liberty had a handle on the game right from kickoff, and several Red Devils had stellar offensive performances against a sub-par Blacksburg defense.
The majority of Liberty’s scores came from Erick Sanchez and Tanner Chambers, who led the Red Devil offense.
Sanchez registered three scores on the night while Chambers added two of his own to give Liberty a comfortable lead throughout.
Blacksburg got its offense going in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run from Tyler Cobb. Blacksburg would add two more scores in the fourth, but it would be too little too late as Liberty found its first win of the season.
With the win, Liberty moves to 1-6 on the year with a 1-3 record in the region. Blacksburg is now 0-7 overall with a 0-4 region record.
The Red Devils will hit the road this week to face Crescent in another region contest. Liberty will then look towards a home game with Pendleton before closing out the regular season on Nov. 1 at Carolina Academy.
Kickoff against Crescent is set for 7:30 p.m.
