PICKENS – The Playground of Promise, Tennis Courts and Town Creek Trail will be closed through April 18 while playground equipment and fencing are removed so construction vehicles can access the trail to begin working on Town Creek Park.

The lower recreation center parking lot will be closed until fall when construction is complete.

Some trees will be removed and a 70-foot-long recycled bridge will be moved into the trail area through the playground. Once the bridge is in place, it is likely the tennis courts and parts of the playground will be reopened.

The total construction budget is $765,000. The City of Pickens received a $400,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and $100,000 grant from the S.C. Recreational Trails Program.

The city put in cash match from the hospitality tax account, which is restricted by state law to only be used on tourism related activities. The vision is for the park to be a state-of-the-art riding facility that draws riders of all levels from across the Southeast.

Construction will be completed on the Appalachian Lumber Greenway by July 1 and the rest of the construction will be completed this fall.

The general contractor is J Davis Construction and the city’s engineer is Darrohn Engineering. Elevated Trail Design will assist J Davis Construction with installation of bike-specific riding features.

J Davis Construction will have signage and major lay down areas at the recreation center and at the Playground of Promise indicating the limits of work during construction. The entire master plan for the project will take several years to complete, but can be viewed at the recreation center and towncreekpark.com.

No one will be permitted to enter the area unless they are an authorized representative of the city wearing a hard hat, being escorted by a J Davis site representative, and have listened to a safety briefing outline the rules and regulations of the job site.
