PICKENS — Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as “Music in the Mountains 2014” continues with the Hagood Mill hosting a free “Deep Winter Blues” concert from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 15 in the mill site Visitor Building.
The concert will feature Steve McGaha, well known upstate blues guitarist, teacher and 2003 winner of the prestigious Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, along with harmonica master Freddie Vanderford.
Vanderford’s passion for music started at an early age when he befriended legendary blues harmonica player Peg Leg Sam at the age of 16. His talent and enthusiasm for music have earned him much recognition and many awards, including the 2010 Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award, which he was awarded for “maintaining and sharing the tradition of Piedmont Blues Harp.
Joining McGaha and Vanderford for the day will be our special guest, blues guitarist, J. Michael King. Playing the blues since 1966, King has absorbed many influences and mastered many styles resulting in his performances with such artists as Chuck Jackson, Bobby Lewis, Billy Joe Royal, Phil Guy and many more.
For visitors to this month’s Hagood Mill event King will be serving up a healthy dose of the local South Carolina music known as the Piedmont Blues.
At 3 p.m., Vanderford will offer a free blues harmonica workshop for those that bring their (key of “C”) harp. Seating is very limited and first come, first served. Come early and share a great day with the folks at Hagood Mill. The old gristmill and other demonstrations will be running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The water-powered 1845 Hagood Gristmill is one of the finest examples of 19th century technology in the Upstate and operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just three miles north of Pickens off S.C. 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Other than the Third Saturday Events the Mill Site will be closed until further notice as we continue our search for a new site manager.
