EASLEY — After competing in eight state championships and three national championships, shuffleboard experts Joseph and Doris Turner of Easley have medaled 54 times.

“We have been to San Francisco, California to play in the nationals, we have been to Houston, Texas to play in the nationals, and we have been to Cleveland, Ohio to play in the nationals,” Doris said. “We competed in the state at Bob Jones University and Frances Marion University and you have to win the state to play in the nationals.”

Shuffleboard can be played by two or four people and requires the use of a shuffleboard court, cues, and discs.

According to Joseph, the couple became interested in the activity while in Florida.

“When we retired 16 years ago, we started going to Florida and we got involved with the seniors playing at our resort,” Joseph said. “We then got involved in playing in state and national competitions eight years ago, and we enjoy it and it helps us stay young.”

The couple’s fire for competition also burns bright between the two.

“She’s got a little edge on me at times,” Joseph said. “We go head-to-head and for the most part it is a split, but she might have an edge.”

Doris echoed the sentiments of her husband and her desire to win.

“I love to beat everybody,” Doris said. “I lost gold in San Francisco by three points but I did win a silver medal out there.”

Joseph said the couple enjoyed mutual success at national completion earlier this year in Cleveland.

“My wife’s best finish was in San Francisco because she got second place and I only got fourth,” Joseph said. “However, we were both successful this year in Cleveland, Ohio. We both won bronze medals while playing doubles.”

The couple plan to continue playing shuffleboard and competing at state and national levels.
