PICKENS — The fifth annual Wings and Wheels for Meals event April 12 netted a record sum of $16,098. It was hosted by the Pickens County Meals on Wheels and Pickens County Airport.

“This event was such a success because of the hard work of the Pickens County Pilot’s Association, our sponsors and volunteers,” said Meta Bowers, executive director of Pickens County Meals on Wheels. “Events like this help keep our wheels rolling. All monies raised this year will help hundreds of homebound elderly and disabled clients maintain their nutritional needs, quality of life and independence.”

Fixed wing airplanes and helicopters offered event-goers a bird’s eye view of Pickens County. Pilots from the Pickens County Pilot’s Association donated their planes and flying time in support of Meals on Wheels.

This year pilots were Arlie Asay, Verone Peace, David Bryant, Wayne Hobin and Toby Tyler, who flew for five hours. Also taxiing for take-off was an open cockpit bi-wing Stearman flown by Mike Williams.

More than 106 vehicles were on display at this year’s Custom and Classic Car Show. Winner of the People’s Choice award for a third year in a row was Chuck and Irene Bakers’ 2008 Shelby GT500. This year’s Best in Show was awarded to Robert Fulmer’s 1965 Corvette Stingray.

JD Stone served as the guest emcee. Participating organizations included Pickens County EMS, Liberty Police Department, Redneck Engineering, Pickens Raptors RC Model Airplane Club, Hilton Head Fliers at Pickens County Airport, Bates Masonic Lodge and Yoder’s of Meece Mill.

This year’s fundraising achievement of $16,098 will more than support one of the 22 Meals-on-Wheels routes for an entire year.
