EASLEY — The cause of a fire that gutted a home at 202 Pine St. in Easley early Monday morning is not yet known but some neighbors think it is related to people using the condemned home to do drugs.

“We’ve been pretty certain young people had been doing drugs there, cooking meth,” said one resident who requested their name be withheld. “The place has been empty for a while now and you would see kids coming and going at all hours of the day.”

The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire, which was reported at 5 a.m. Monday. Firefighters were able to control the blaze and were assisted by Easley Police Department. No other property was damaged.

“Me and my wife were the last people to live in that house before it was condemned,” said Bobby Adams, who still lives in the area. “There were two couples that came out of that house just before five in the morning, just before the fire started. People have been hiding in there and doing drugs since it was condemned.”

The report of four individuals leaving the vacant residence was also confirmed by a resident who wanted to remain anonymous.

“There were four of them, two boys and two girls it looked like to me,” the witness said. “They looked like they were in their early 20s at the most. Until the fire started going I didn’t think much about it since people were in and out over there all the time.”
