PICKENS COUNTY – Patrolling traffic for master deputy Cory Baker of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is a dedicated profession, patrolling the woods with his hunting dogs is a dedicated passion.
“I enjoy using the dogs for tracking game and I really enjoy training them from puppies,” Baker said. “I trained the best dog I’ve got from a pup and seeing him track whether it is a bear or hog is very rewarding. It makes all of the hiking through the woods, the climbing, and getting cuts and bruises worth it. I use all of my hunting dogs for bear and hog hunting.”
Baker is a lifelong resident of Pickens County and is a 2003 graduate of Pickens High School.
Following high school, Baker attended Tri-County Technical College and studied Criminal Justice until he was hired by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.
“As I was studying for my criminal justice degree, one of the captains here at the sheriff’s office called and asked me if I was interested in a job,” Baker said. “He set up an interview and it worked out. I got hired in August of 2006.”
Baker said he began his career in law enforcement working in the detention center.
“I worked in the detention center for about four months,” he said. “After four months, I started work as a deputy on the road and I have been here ever since.”
Baker graduated the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in May of 2007.
According to Baker, making friends on the right side of the law helped persuade him to pursue his own career with the badge.
“When I was in high school, I had a couple of buddies working for the Pickens City Police Department,” Baker said. “It really looked like I would enjoy doing what they were doing, so I decided to pursue it myself.”
Baker said a career in uniform for him is a lifelong investment.
“I really enjoy being in uniform and working with the public,” Baker said. “I like representing the office and I enjoy helping the public. The public knows they can come to me for help and I see myself doing this for the remainder of my working career.”
Baker is also a part-time volunteer firefighter for the Pickens City Fire Department, the Holly Springs Fire Department, and The Cliffs Fire Department.
