Troup County Sheriff’s spokesman Stewart Smith said all children injured in the slide collapse at Rosemont Elementary School on Friday have been released from the two hospitals where they were treated. Smith said he was unsure of the extent of the injuries the students had sustained.

Smith said the sheriff’s office is not investigating the incident, since it is not a criminal matter, but deputies were first responders at the scene. He said the investigation into the incident is a Troup County School System matter, but the sheriff’s office would work with the school system if asked.

The approximately 24-foot inflatable slide collapsed at about 1 p.m. Friday inside the school’s gym. Two students were flown to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and six others were taken by ambulance to the West Georgia Health for the injuries they received during the incident.

Sheriff James Woodruff chauffeured the parents of the two flown-out students to Atlanta to meet with their children. He said none of the injuries were life-threatening and they were flown to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

This morning Woodruff was headed to the school to meet with the principal to discuss the incident, though he too said that his office is conducting the investigation.

Eighteen students were involved in the incident, according to Tina Duckett, Troup County School System’s public relations director, though it is unclear if they were all on the inflatable at the time of the collapse or if there was a dysfunction with the inflatable slide.

Duckett said the school system is still investigating and they are working with the school’s insurance company.
