Remembering J. C. Hayes
Capt. J.C. Hayes, a former member of Pickens County Council, died last Friday. J.C. was a strong Republican and very active in the Pickens County Party.
We remember J.C. for many things. First and foremost, was his distinguished military service: he served in the U.S. Navy for 40 years and fought in three wars.
J.C. once told a group of us that after graduation from high school, he went to college (1) to learn and (2) to play football. But when a coach told him not to be so involved in his studies, J.C. bolted, joining the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man, later going to OCS.
J.C. took an active role in the county party. Once or twice he emceed our combination dinner/debate for the primary election. He frequently attended our monthly Saturday morning breakfast and had questions for the guest speaker. Sometimes those questions were difficult ones, and J.C. was unrelenting. Once, it was all I could do to keep from laughing, as J.C. repeated for the third time: “But you did not answer my question; the question was ‘how did you vote on that (legislative) bill.’”
We will ever be grateful for J.C.’s exemplary service to his country, and we are thankful that we had the opportunity to know this great American and to call him friend.
