EASLEY – Elliott Kelley, a 2014 graduate of Bob Jones Academy, placed 20th in the nation out of 250 debaters in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the 2014 National Speech and Debate Association Tournament held June 15-20 in Overland Park, Kan.
Students qualified to participate in the national tournament during the spring competition season. The South Carolina district sent 24 qualifiers in 10 events, and Kelley was one of two qualifiers from South Carolina to compete nationally in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
In addition to placing 20th in the nation, Kelley set a new BJA record of debate accomplishment by debating through 11 rounds of competition. Prior to his accomplishment, BJA students had only reached the ninth round and the top 50 in the nation. Kelley is coached by Chuck Nicholas, BJA’s speech and debate coach.
Kelley, a resident of Easley, will attend Bob Jones University this fall and major in Business Administration.
