EASLEY — Carl Adams Bearden, 91, husband of the late Shirley Marie Barrett Bearden, passed away Friday, August 16, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Mr. Bearden was born in Oconee County, SC, a son of the late Joseph Freeman and Carrie Etta Baygents Bearden. He graduated from Walhalla High School and subsequently joined the U.S. Navy. At age twenty, he was serving in the Panama Canal Zone when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served 20 years in the Navy, also stationed in Pensacola, FL, Norfolk, VA, and aboard the U.S.S. Cabot (CVL-28) aircraft carrier.
In July of 1946, Carl and Shirley were married at the U. S. Naval Air Station Chapel in Pensacola. They were together for 63 happy years.
In 1959 Mr. Bearden went to work for the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago and in 1967 returned to South Carolina where he worked at Donaldson Center in Greenville and later for Platt Saco Lowell in Easley.
Mr. Bearden was an accomplished woodworker, carpenter, and furniture maker. He and his wife were members and contributors of the Senior Citizens of Greenville Country Store in McPherson Park, Greenville and also in the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro, SC.
Survivors include his daughter, Carla B. Rood of Easley and his granddaughter, Vanessa Rood Weatherly and her husband Robert Foster Weatherly of Atlanta, GA.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Bearden was preceded in death by a brother Milton Edward Bearden.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Saturday, August 24, 2013 in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Pickens. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.
