It‘s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the summer and another school year will soon be upon us. For the high school students here in Easley that means another year in the new facility and another season of Green Wave football away from Brice Field.

Yes, high school football, the most dependable story on any reporter’s beat, and it’s certainly not a bad way to earn a dollar travelling the roads of Pickens County every Friday night in the fall to cover the games.

And perhaps the nicest thing about those Friday nights in Easley is that it is the only time all year that a lack of traffic allows me to drive seamlessly up highway 123.

But the upcoming season will bring us more than empty roadways during home games.

A significant change has taken place along the sidelines for the Easley squad as former coach Chad Smith took his winning ways and persistent running game to another school, leaving reporters like me to now exhaust their post game efforts badgering the new head coach, Grayson Howell.

And he seems like a good coach and nice guy, and somebody that’s going to put the ball in the air a bit more than we have been used to around here.

But filling the shoes of Coach Smith will be no easy task for Howell, Smith may not have utilized the passing game very much but he sure ran his way to 29 wins in three seasons.

Having said that, I doubt this year’s Green Wave offense will remind anyone of the 2005 Indianapolis Colts, but I am betting they will throw a few more wrinkles in there and stretch beyond the traditional ground game we have seen in past seasons.

In an interview with Coach Howell over the winter he said that he had always been an offensive guy and that he played receiver in high school.

So let’s hope we see some big plays in the passing game this year, and let’s hope to see some receivers use their hands for more than blocking.

After all, no one wants to run the ball on third and long.

Let it fly.
