I know this may not be the sort of column you’re used to reading from me after a couple of months or so, but this is a blog I have posted on my own social media and over the past couple of years there have been any number of requests to reprint it.

So, I thought I would do just that here with a little background or history. I mean, you guys are beginning to see me all over and I have complete strangers recognize me now, so I suppose sharing a little something of me wouldn’t be a bad idea.

The guy you see now, the one in the flip flops (when Lola hasn’t eaten them), blue jeans and unkempt hair … that guy was always there, but I lived my life to make everyone else happy. So he was sequestered in a dingy, roach filled no-tell-motel, quietly and patiently waiting for his opportunity to come out and play.

Being untrue to your own nature and character, what misery that was until the day I discovered I was just a tad wiser than I first thought.

Hence, you now see the things I have found to be true in MY life. Over the last four or five years these have served me well as I have learned and grown and refined them, so, for what it’s worth here is a list of the things I have found to be true in life and each of these lessons came the hard way, through blood, sweat, and in many cases far too many tears:

1. ANYONE can accomplish ANYTHING for themselves they can dream through PERSISTENCY and CONSISTENCY.

2. I am an original, why should I be anything other than unique.

3. I have two ears and one mouth for a reason … to listen twice as much as I speak.

4. There are no selfless acts, do a good deed for someone you don’t know and enjoy the feeling every day.

5. Nine times out of ten the hard thing to do is the right thing to do.

6. Friends are hard to find but a lot harder to keep.

7. A kiss from someone that truly loves you rejuvenates the spirit and surprisingly may help me live better if not longer.

8. I don’t need a great shot to make up for a bad one, when a good one will do … keep swinging.

9. God does exist on some level but doesn’t need high finance or cathedrals … He built His own.

10. Accept others for being different, I WILL need the favor returned at some point.

11. Forgive others for my sake, not theirs.

12. My children are smarter than I think, and their opinions do matter … I’m always surprised by the choices they make with the right guidance and love.

13. Being right where my parents are concerned isn’t as important as I thought.

14. MY life is MY OWN and not dependent on the approval of others or material things … it is MY RESPONSIBILITY to cultivate it.

15. A day in which I learned nothing new is a day wasted.

16. The measure of a man should never be taken when things are going his way, it’s only when the chips are down you see his true mettle and worth.

17. My family consists of those I choose.

18. Art, literature, music, poetry, and a smile are the reflections of the good man is truly capable of … I should enjoy one of them every day … the creativity of others will undoubtedly spark my own.

19. My life is a tune where it doesn’t matter if anyone can carry it, as long as I know the words.

20. The ways to make love are limitless and their number is unfathomable to small minds like my own.

21. The moment I think I have it all figured out I need to start over.

22. The only limits on MY life are the ones OTHERS try to force on me … keep dreaming.

23. My goal is to leave this place better than I found it.

24. I ask myself every day, “Have I done all I can to change the things that make me unhappy?” If the answer is yes, I am only fooling myself.

25. NEVER quit because something is hard … I am capable of more than I can imagine.

26. Distance creates perspective.

27. I need to step outside of my comfort zone and see how much more interesting life becomes.

28. There is always someone who knows more than I do … get over it and learn from them.

29. Wealth doesn’t rid you of your problems, it only makes them more expensive.

30. Honesty is truth that has been to finishing school … there is a difference.

So there, now you have an insight into who I am and how it is I live. I certainly wouldn’t presume to advocate anything for anyone reading this column. This is for your entertainment, and if something I’ve said here sticks or makes a difference in your life, you’re welcome, and just remember:

“Peace, love, and happiness are priceless, but there’s no price too high to be shed of misery.”
