LIBERTY — The Liberty Education Theatre program is still young, but growing, and the improv comedy wing of the troupe will debut a new Christmas show this month.
The show, “Walking Shadows 1st Annual Family Christmas Celebration” will be performed 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18 at Liberty’s Rosewood Center.
Walking Shadows is an improv troupe comprised of Liberty High School students Moose Brown, Jesse Campbell, Stephanie Cope, Samantha Crawford, Amber Grayson, Brittany Mayo, Dylan Pancoast and Bristtle Thompson, under the direction of Liberty Middle School teacher David Holland.
The group debuted their “Football-less Friday Nights” — special improv shows performed on nights when the Liberty Red Devils were playing at away games.
The new show should appeal to the group’s fans and newcomers alike, and promises to be good, family fun, Holland said.
“It is a tribute to our regulars who deserve to be wowed by what they see,” says Holland. “But at the same time this show will be easily accessible for those who have never been to one of our shows or to an improv show at all.”
If you’re just familiar with the short-form improv games like those performed on the popular show “Whose Line is It Anyway?” then you’re in for a treat.
Though the group is keeping many of the detail of the Christmas show under wraps, Holland said the show will combine improv with a narrative and will feature musical guests Lauren Daniels, Jim Thompson and Abi Holland.
“We’re attempting to kind of do something different with improve than what’s been done before,” Holland said. “It’s kind of an experimental venture, with telling a story through long-form narrative improv, rather than just a bunch of games.”
Liberty Educational Theatre definitely knows comedy — this summer it produced a special performance of the hilarious “The Complete History of America (abridged)” in conjunction with Liberty’s July 4 celebration.
The group also performed the musical “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” which brought the beloved Charles Schulz “Peanuts” characters to life.
Liberty Educational Theatre aims to instill better communication skills and help students learn to interact positively with one another — all while having fun.
Doors open at the Rosewood Center at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Individual tickets, available at the door, are $10, with $5 tickets available for groups of 10 or more, Holland said.
The group is offering a special online discount. Search for Walking Shadows on the social network www.facebook.com. Once you’ve found them on Facebook, click on Become a Fan to receive a coupon for $5 off the ticket price.
