EASLEY — Last week four friends worked together to decorate a tree that will be part of the “Festival of Lights” at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway during the holiday season.
The festival will feature many flashy decorations, which will likely outshine the simple tree.
But the warmth generated by this special tree will reach halfway across the world.
Janey Turner of Easley has operated, “Hands for Soldiers” for the past six years because of her passion for those serving the country overseas. Turner collects items for care packages that are forwarded to soldiers serving in Iran, Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world.
Boxes have already been created for the next group of donation. Now Turner and her friends are trying to raise money for postage. The group needs to raise at least $4,000.
Care packages will be shipped to the USS Cowpens, Capm Liberty and the Locklin Air Force Base this time.
Turner has a busy month planned, with a visit to Fort Bragg set.
More than 15,000 care packages have been sent to soldiers through Turner’s program.
Donations are tax deductible. For more information, write to 503 W. Main Street, Easley, 29640, or call 306-3607.
