• From The Progress editorial page: “If Both Have Failed, Then What? — A year ago the prohabition amendment was repealed and the majority of the country returned to legalized sale of liquor. The leaders of the dry forces of the country now declare that after a year’s trial, that legalizd sale of whiskey has been proven to be a complete failure. Drunkeness and crime, they claim, have both largely increased, and on the the account of the sale of whiskey and beer. They claim that promises that have been made have been broken, and that the country today is as it was in the days of the open saloon. That the bootlegger is flourishing as in the days of yore; and in fact that the country is in a bad fix and steadily getting worse, all on account of the sale of whiskey. In fact, that the legalized sale of alcoholic drinks is a complete failure.”
