California edges Florida, 5-4

EASLEY—Lucas Sardo singled and scored on a single by AJ David in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift California to a 5-4 victory over Florida Monday afternoon in the Big League World Series at the JB “Red”Owens Recreation Complex in Easley.

California, the West Region champion, finished US pool play with a 3-1 record, tied with the Easley-based host team for second place. Easley won the tiebreaker based on runs allowed per defensive inning, to advance to Tuesday’s semi-final round. Florida fell to 1-3.

The West Region champions scored first when Jacob Valdez singled and then scored on a single by pitcher Ryan Hartman to take a 1-0 lead. Russell Terry came in to pinch-run for Hartman and scored on a single by Stratton Kim to give California a 2-0 lead.

Carter Cashman led off the second inning with a home run to cut the California lead to 2-1.

David led off the bottom of the third for the West Region champions with a walk and Joseph Rivera had a one-out single. David advance to third and Rivera to second on a wild pitch. Chad Rebensdorf singled home both runners for a 4-1 California lead.

Florida responded with two runs of it on in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. Jordan Savinon singled and then scored on a double to left field by Cashman. Brad Miller got an infield single and Cashman advanced to third base. Cashman scored on a single by Jack Hamrick.

Savinon led off the sixth with a single and then reached second and then reached second on a California throwing error. Savinon then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored later in the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sardo got a two-out single and reached second on a single by Adrian Uriarte. Russell Terry reached first on an error by the third baseman, moving Sardo to third. Sardo scored the winning run on David’s single to give California a 5-4 lead.

California pitcher Ryan Hartman, who gave up eight hits and one walk while striking out five to earn his second win of the tournament, got Florida out in the seventh without allowing a baserunner to preserve the victory.
