EASLEY—The Philippines, winners of the Asia/Pacific region, scored runs in the first four innings and earned its first victory of the Big League World Series, defeating Italy 13-5 Sunday afternoon at the JB “Red” Owens Recreation Complex in Easley.
The Philippines improved to 1-2, while Italy finished its play in the tournament with a 1-3 record.
Dio Remollo led the Asia/Pacific champions with four hits, four RBI and three runs scored. Francisco Hashimoto had three hits and four RBI as the Philippines pounded out 16 hits in the game.
The Philippines got a 1-0 in the first inning when Carlos Munoz singled and scored. They added two more runs in the second and two in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Italy came back in the bottom of the third as they strung together three consecutive hits by Daniele Furlan, Davide Bertoldi and Alessandro Tonzar. Furlan scored to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Asia/Pacific champions scored three more runs in the third to take an 8-1 lead. Italy, winners of the Europe/Middle East/Africa Region, scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-2. Both teams scored once in the sixth making, the score 9-2 going into the final inning. The Philippines scored four runs in the top of the inning to go up 13-2. Italy scored two in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game.
Furlan and Tonzar had two hits each to lead Italy, and Tonzar and Bertoldi had two RBI apiece. Italy had nine hit in the game.
The Philippines play their final game of the Big League World Series Monday at 9 a.m. against Canada, 0-3.
