Wren Beta Club brings home top honors

PIEDMONT—Wren High School’s Beta Club brought home top-honors once again at the annual South Carolina State Convention earlier this month.

The club was able to finish strong at the Convention, which spanned Feb. 1 through Feb. 3 in Myrtle Beach, bringing home seven awards. The success marks a school record for the Beta Club.

Sophomore Kate Brady, Oratory, and senior Jeremy Fowler, English, finished atop their respective categories.

Brady said the experience was very rewarding for the whole group.

“The Beta Convention experience is truly incredible,” Brady said. “I have had fun and been challenged to carry out the Beta ideals of service and leadership. I am so blessed to attend a school that encourages participation in such an awesome event.”

Wren’s Quiz Bowl team also took home top honors. The team consists of senior Mallory Bradberry, senior Jeremy Fowler, junior Jamie Hintson and junior Naimik Patel.

Senior Mitchell Roberts placed second in Acrylic Painting for the second consecutive year.

Third place winners included Eden Crain for Creative Writing and Jamie Hintson for Math.

Wren also placed third in the state in Group Talent.

“The Beta Club Convention was amazing,” sophomore Logan Chapman said. “(It was great) being with such a large group of students from all over the state gathered for the same reason. Even better was showing off Wren’s talent and experiencing the camaraderie with my classmates.”

Wren’s talent entry incorporates the convention theme “Heart of Beta” and showcases Wren students’ talent in a series of humorous sketches based on current popular TV shows such as Judge Judy, Big Bang Theory, and Duck Dynasty.

The seven-minute skit also includes a stomp routine and original lyrics to the tune of “Rolling in the Deep.”

“The SC Beta Club Convention provides opportunities to connect with other Betas and to gain social and academic experience through competitions,” senior Sarah Knowles said. “To stand and cheer among hundreds of teenagers who value academics, service, and leadership is a powerful experience. The sense of belonging far outweighs the competition outcomes.”

All first and second-place winners at the state level are invited to compete at the National Beta Convention, which is held June 19-21 in Mobile, Alabama.
