Two escape from residential fire early Thursday morning

PICKENS—Two local residents are safe after a 3 a.m. blaze destroyed a barn-structure in Pickens early Thursday morning.

Pickens firefighters were called to a residence on Walhalla Highway Thursday, but most of the damage had already been done by the time they arrived.

“Ultimately, it was a total loss,” Pickens firefighter Chris Elrod said. “There were two people actually living there, but the smoke woke them up and they were able to get out and there weren’t any injuries.”

After responding to the call, Pickens firemen realized they needed to call for backup.

“We called for help from Six Mile Fire Department, Holly Springs Fire Department and Keowee Springs Fire Department for man power and tankers,” Elrod said. “The hydrant was not close enough to be able to lay a line so we had to shuttle water.”

Elrod said a cause hasn’t been determined.

“We haven’t determined the exact cause of the fire,” Elrod said. “We don’t think it is suspicious or anything like that.”

Elrod said the structure that burned was similar to a barn, but part of it had been changed to a living quarters. The building was nearly 8,000 square feet, according to Elrod.

Oconee County - The Oconee Humane Society will be hosting two mega adoption events at area PetSmarts on Saturday, June 22. One will be at the Seneca PetSmart in the Applewood Shopping Center on Highway 123 from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Seneca Foothills Elks Lodge #2822. The other with be held at the Easley PetSmart next to Walmart on Highway 123 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Cats and dogs and puppies and kittens will be available at both locations. Cats and kittens will be inside the stores while dogs and puppies will be outside (weather permitting). All animals are microchipped, spayed or neutered, dewormed and will have age appropriate vaccinations. Dogs over 6 months of age are heartworm tested negative, and cats are tested feline leukemia negative. All animals are also eligible for a free one-month veterinary insurance coverage.

Additionally, PetSmart offers each adopter a free “goody bag” which includes coupons valued at $200.

Cash or check payments for adoption fees can be made at either store, and the Seneca location can also accept credit cards.

Oconee Humane Society always has cats and kittens available in the Seneca PetSmart’s adoption room, so if you’re not in the market for a new cat now, keep these cats in mind when you are ready to adopt. Both dogs and cats are always available at the shelter on Sandifer Blvd., and all of these animals are listed on the OHS website.

If you can’t adopt but would like to help, donations would be appreciated. Ask about the foster program and other volunteer opportunities at the shelter or special events. For additional information, please visit oconeehumane.org
