PICKENS — Our Diamond Day celebration was a tremendous success! By all accounts, the forecast for Saturday was a 50/50 chance of rain but we were able to complete the entire day’s festivities. The dunking booth volunteers definitely stole the show. The kids had a great time dunking their favorite coach! We want to thank all of our friends, relatives and visiting teams from Honea Path, Wren, Iva, Liberty, Dacusville and Greenville County who came to enjoy the day with us and supported this event.

During the midday festivities, we were very fortunate to have a personal visit from Reedy Rip’It, the Greenville Drive mascot. Reedy visited with the kids and posed for tons of pictures! It doesn’t matter how old you are, the urge to get a quick picture with a giant green frog is irrestible! We can’t thank the Greenville Drive organization enough for sharing Reedy with us on Saturday.

The 3rd Annual PYAC Town Creek Speedy Ball Race also ran on Saturday. Over 325 colorful plastic balls raced down Town Creek in just under 8 minutes. I am immeasurably grateful to all the folks who sold and helped us with this fundraiser. The Rec. Dept. was proud to award three sellers who went above and beyond. These participants were 1st place & 2nd place (a tie) – Jack and Sarah Childress; and 3rd place – Zander Gravely. Winners of the Speedy Ball Race were as follows: 1st place and winner of the $200.00 cash prize was Ball #400, purchased by Paige Speir; 2nd place and winner of a gas blower was Ball #164, purchased by Julie Cleveland; and 3rd place and winner of a $50.00 Walmart gift card was Ball #171, purchased by Tammy Anthony. We would like to thank the following businesses for their donations: OWT-TTI North America, JD Sports, Walmart and Blue Ridge Coop. Thank you players, parents and racers!!!

It would be almost impossible to recognize all the volunteers who contributed to make Diamond Day a success, but I do want to gratefully acknowledge the following friends: race helpers Charlie Anthony, Alex Levy, Clay Adcox, Mason and Gunner Covey, Travis Mitchell, Jay Crowe; special thanks to Bryan Roper, who set-up/ran the food tent and stayed from start to finish; concession workers Tammy Anthony, Rodney Wakefield, Mandy Keller, Ashley Crawford, Jodi Broom, Josh Fisher; Dunking Booth Crew – Betsy and Maleah Kelley, Stacie and Carlee Seaborn, Tripp Martin, Stan Nix, Jake Tomlinson, Chad Trotter, Carrie Sutherland, Chad LaMance, Heidi Covey; and clean-up – Janice and Scott Owens and JoJo Kelley. Thanks again guys and please forgive any oversights!

Cheerleading/Football registration has begun and will continue through Friday, June 14th. Birthdate cut-off for both is September 1. Please take this into account when registering your child for either sport. Cheerleading fitting dates are Wednesday, May 22 and Wednesday, June 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road. The uniform style is NEW this year so your cheerleader must attend one of the two fitting dates in order to cheer during the 2013 season. The entire set includes a two piece style uniform, briefs and poms. The cost is $98.00 for the uniform package plus the registration fee. For additional information, contact the Rec. Dept. at 878-2296.

Don’t forget about our summer day camp and the different sports camps that are available through the Recreation Dept. We will be happy to mail brochures to you, or registration forms can be picked up at the Rec. office. Please feel free to call with any questions.

Until next time…

A blast from the past
I’m not much of a car guy, but Friday night I was. This weekend I had the opportunity of joining a massive Pickens crowd at the annual Blue Ridge Fest on Main Street in downtown Pickens, and it was worth the time. I had never been, but this festival rivals most others I have ever attended. ...
