PICKENS—The Pickens High athletic department will soon be under new leadership.
The school announced this week current baseball coach Stan Butler will assume athletic director duties during the 2013-2014 school year.
Butler, a graduate of Erskine College, has been named Region I-AAA Baseball Coach of the Year three times.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Coach Butler through the years and to observe his dedication as a professional whether in the classroom or on the field of contest,” Pickens High Principal Marion Lawson said. “I am confident that Coach Butler is ready to assume the primary leadership role in our athletic department, and I am very grateful for the leadership that Steve Corn has provided while Stan has served as our assistant athletic director.”
Butler began his teaching career at South Middle School in Lancaster, where he served as teacher, department chair and athletic director for seven years. He moved to Pickens in 2000 and began his teaching and coaching career at Pickens High. Butler has served as head baseball coach, girls golf coach and assistant football coach while at Pickens.
As the head baseball coach for 10 years, he led his teams to three region championships, three district titles and nine trips to the playoffs.
As girls’ golf coach, he led his team to its first ever region championship. In addition, he led his team to the Upper State championship and qualified athletes for the state tournament during his three-year tenure.
Butler earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Erskine, and a Masters degree in Education from Winthrop.
He has served as assistant athletic director for three years and the physical education department chair for thirteen years.
