PICKENS SCENE

Jeannie Gilstrap, owner of Stockade ‘N Stuff in Pickens shows off leg chains she found in the former Pickens County jail. Her father bought the building, which now houses her antique shop in 1969 at county auction. The building ceased service as a jail under former Sheriff David Stone in 1968, and the current location became the site for the county lockup. The building on Gentry Memorial Highway became a warehouse before being used for the antique shop. Gilstrap says that visitors are interested in learning about the history of the building and ghost stories surrounding it. The jail was built in 1932 by Works Progress Administration (WPA) builders.
