PICKENS — Changes come with the new year, as two new members of Pickens County Council will take office Tuesday night at the Pickens County Administration Building.

Jeff Martin and Trey Whitehurst, who were elected to office in November, will take the oath of office at 6:30 p.m., with Judge Gary Barnes administering the oath.

Martin, a Democrat, defeated Bill Reid in the November election. Martin replaces Councilman James London, who chose not to seek re-election.

Whitehurst was unopposed in the November general election. He defeated Councilman Randy Crenshaw in the Republican primary.

Following a brief reception, council will begin the county’s business by electing a new chairperson, vice chairperson and chairperson-pro tempore.

County attorney Ken Roper will preside over the election of the new chairperson. The new chairperson will preside over the election of the two other officers.

Councilman Neil Smith has served as the chairperson for the past four years.
