Thousands—yes thousands of children across the state of South Carolina are victims of abuse and neglect every year. More often than not, it is at the hands of the people who are supposed to be protecting them.

April has been designated as Child Abuse Awareness Month throughout the United States. For those of us who advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children, our hope is that one day this travesty will end. Until that day comes, children need compassionate adults who are willing to donate a few hours each month as a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem.

Through the concerted efforts of a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem, children can look forward to a future that does not include abuse or neglect. With the free training provided by our Program, you will be given a firm foundation, including the skill sets needed to ensure each child you work with has every opportunity for a positive outcome.

Yes, April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. Let us not forget, however, that abuse and neglect of children happens every day of every month. Please make the decision today to get involved. Contact Cindy Wolthuis in Pickens County to sign up for the next free training. A safe, permanent home—be a part of making that a reality for a child. (You can find out more information about becoming a Volunteer with the Guardian ad Litem Program by visiting our website at www.Pickens sc.gal.org, finding us on Facebook.com/GALVolunteersSC or follow us on Twitter @GALVolunteersSc).
