Two Lake Keowee homes aflame Tuesday

SUNSET - Two multi-million dollar homes in The Reserve subdivision on Lake Keowee were destroyed in a Tuesday morning fire that lit up the Sunset Community skyline.

Shady Grove Fire Department received a call at 2:10 a.m. about a possible fire in the Pine Grove Church Road area.

First responders were on the scene within 10 minutes of the initial page, and determined that two homes in The Reserve at Lake Keowee were involved in the fire.

More than 35 full-time and volunteer firefighters were called in to contain the fire, some of which are residents and employees of The Reserve.

Pickens Fire Chief David Porter, said "It took us two hours to get the fire under control and we will continue to monitor the hot spots. We are working closely with the Pickens County Sheriff's Department to determine the cause of the fire."

The first to arrive at the scene was Bobby Cummins, a resident of The Reserve at Lake Keowee and volunteer firefighter.

Cummins credited the extensive onsite fire prevention system and the skill of the experienced firefighters for keeping the damage to a minimum.

Both homes were unoccupied at the time of the fire. One of the houses, located on North Lawn Drive, was still under construction and slated to be finished within two weeks, Reserve Community Manager Chuck Pigg said in a press statement.

The second house, located next door, had just been completed, he said.

In 2005, The Reserve partnered with Pickens County and donated an on-site parcel for the Shady Grove Fire Department Substation to help service the area.

The Reserve is a 3,900-acre, private lakefront village community developed by Greenwood Communities and Resorts. Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains along the shores of 18,500-acre Lake Keowee, The Reserve offers a full complement of amenities already in place that include a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, marina, village, pool pavilion, racquet club, hiking, fitness, and family activities.
