SIX MILE - The Pickens County Democratic Party is seeking delegates to attend the state convention, scheduled for May 3 in Columbia.
Chairman John Painter put out the call for delegates during the party's monthly meeting Saturday morning.
"We have 29 people scheduled to attend as delegates for the Pickens County party," Painter said. "We are allotted 40 delegates, plus 40 alternates. I want to find some people to at least fill out those 11 slots.
"I'd love to have a full complement of delegates," he continued. "I've got plenty of room."
As chairman, Painter can appoint delegates to the convention.
"If you can convince me that you're democratic in your thinking and you're going to be a part of what's going on in the Democratic Party," he said.
Painter would love to have a Pickens County party member go the national convention as a delegate, he said.
Delegates should do more than just show up, said former delegate Aleta Robinson.
"It is more than just voting," she said. "They need to campaign. You can't just go to Columbia and want just your delegation to vote for you. You've got to get the entire third congressional districts to know who you are and think you can go to national."
Painter explained the recent controversy concerning local democratic candidates.
Pickens County Republican Party chairman Phillip Bowers has accused democrats of improper filing procedures.
"I had a hard time finding filing locations on a Sunday," Painter said. "Which begs the question whether or not filing should begin on Sunday. I don't think that's a real bright idea."
Painter handled filing on an appointment basis, he said.
Painter shot down the idea of a democratic conspiracy.
"To have a conspiracy, you have to have a rationale for a conspiracy," he said. "There's just no rationale as to why I would want to prevent someone from filing as democrat. It's not my job to pick and choose who can run."
Members agreed.
"A democratic conspiracy is an oxymoron," Matthew Saltzman said.
Painter said he is thrilled with the local democratic candidates this year.
"I'm looking for some victories this year," he said. "I just wish we had more."
Those interested in attending the convention as a delegate, or for more information on the party, should contact Painter at 906-1343 or email johngpainter@hotmail.com.
Delegates must live in Pickens County.
The Pickens County Democratic Party meets 8:30 a.m. the second Saturday of every month at the Six Mile Town Hall.
