EASLEY - Personal and family security - that's the goal behind the city's semi-annual shred day this Saturday.
From 8 a.m.-noon, Easley is giving away peace of mind by providing free-of-charge shredding to residents. Businesses must shred their own documents.
"We're limiting it to residents only because city ordinance provides solid waste and recycling services to households, not to businesses," said Solid Waste and Recycling Supervisor Brent Jennings.
Increased concern over the rising incidence of identity theft prompted the city to undertake the shred day two years ago. It has been held semi-regularly ever since.
"We want to protect the identity of our residents and give them the comfort of knowing their documents are being disposed of properly," Jennings said. "We're hoping to hold this shredding event twice a year so residents can keep up."
Hence, city leaders are expecting to schedule another shred day this year.
"Maybe some residents are still in the throes of their tax returns and aren't able to go through all their paperwork for this shred day," Jennings said. "We want them to know there's one coming in the fall."
Jennings recommends planning ahead to make sure everything sensitive is eliminated.
"Have a special box set aside just for shredding," Jennings said.
Documents that are ideal to bring include old bank statements, certificates and anything with a social security number, mother's maiden name or other sensitive information, he said.
Sometimes, the best peace of mind comes from watching those crucial papers be safely taken away in tiny bits, he said.
"You're more than welcome to stay on site to watch your materials get pulverized," Jennings said.
The shredding will be performed on site by Shred Away of Piedmont.
