PICKENS - Whether they're a Blue Flame or a Green Wave, Pickens and Easley fans know the rivalry between the two schools is fierce.

This year, Meals on Wheels officials want to harness that rivalry for their cause.

This season's Pickens-Easley football game is scheduled for Sept. 12 but the battle for supremacy begins earlier that day, according to PC MOW board member Sam Wyche.

"Pickens County Meals on Wheels is sponsoring a tailgate party from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Legacy Square," he said.

The First Annual Meals on Wheels Food Fight Bowl is a special fundraiser for PC MOW, Wyche said.

"It's going to be a lot of fun, a lot of food, a lot of music, a lot of cheering and competition before the game," he said.

Whisky Rose will take the stage during the event, as will the Pickens High School and the Easley High School bands.

Cheerleaders from each school will also perform at the event.

The highlight of the event is the Ultimate Food Fight, a talent competition between three contestants from each high school.

"They can do anything they want," Wyche said. "We're not limiting it to any particular talent."

Fans can show their support with their wallet.

"People can vote by putting money in containers that will be around the square," Wyche said. "All money will go to Pickens County Meals on Wheels. The Ultimate Food Fight Trophy will go the winner who raises the most money through votes."

The start time of the Pickens-Easley game will be moved back to 8 p.m. for this game only, Wyche said.

The Food Fight replaces Meals on Wheels' annual oyster roast fundraiser, he said.

"We're giving that a rest for a year," Wyche said. "We're going to try this and see how it goes."

The Pickens McDonalds has pledged to donate a portion of that day's earnings to PC MOW, Wyche said.

"After it's over, the bands and the cheerleaders will march down to the stadium and ...we'll play a football game," he said.

The team that comes out victorious on the gridiron will receive a special trophy from Meals on Wheels - one with a personal connection to Wyche.

"I donated the top of one of the Coach of the Year trophies," he said. "The winning team will keep the trophy for a year."
