EASLEY - A woman being pursued by police crashed into an oncoming car, killing herself and another driver Wednesday night.

The head-on collision happened at about 9:15 p.m. on S.C. 183 in Dacusville near the intersection with S.C. 135, authorities said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, said Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles.

Pickens County Sheriff's deputies were in pursuit of a 2001 Chevy Impala headed southbound on S.C. 183, said spokesman Sid Gaulden, with the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

"The driver of the Impala went left of center to pass a vehicle and struck a northbound vehicle head-on," Gaulden said, adding that the northbound car was a 1999 Toyota Camry.

"Two people, the drivers, the sole occupants of both vehicles, were killed," Gaulden said.

Speed is an element of the incident under investigation by the SCHP's multidisciplinary accident investigation team, MAIT, he said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Kandy Kelley is expected to release the names of the deceased sometime today, Thursday.
