EASLEY - The annual "book launch" at McKissick Elementary stands to do more than just have a fun-filled day with prizes, games and lots of smiles.
It's a means to propel students to their next reading level.
Studies show that in order to move up, a child must read a million words on their current level first, according to Principal Tom Polidor.
There were inflatable rides for the kids to enjoy as well as guest readers and familiar faces like Ronald McDonald.
"Ronald McDonald was here to encourage our students to cooperate and show kindness to each other," said Jared Roper, music teacher.
In addition to reading, Ann Summers Sudduth from Mac Science of Clemson came and performed science experiments that awed students.
The day ended with the book parade where students dressed up as their favorite book character and marched around the school where teachers, parents and friends awaited.
"It was a great success and day enjoyed by all," Roper said.
Following the parade, prize drawings were held and four students won a radio while two lucky students walked away with new skateboards.
The book launch was only one of many things McKissick Elementary, its staff and parents do to promote their vision of forming partnerships with families and the community in order to become a "lighthouse for learning," Roper said.
