Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late James Earl and Estelle Stansel Porter.
Mr. Porter was retired from Fiber Industries, and was a member of New Life Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theater during the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are his sons, Thomas Porter and his wife, Denise, of Greenville and William Porter and his wife, Belinda, of Inman; a son-in-law, John Joyce of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Ned Porter of Newport Richey, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Elaine Porter Joyce; and two brothers.
Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at New Life Baptist Church.
Visitation was held from noon-1:15 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.
Burial took place in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family is at the residence, 18 El Paso Drive, Greenville.
