EASLEY—Several area students displayed their talents during the annual Upstate Junior Classic hosted by the Smithfields Country Club on June, 20 and 21.
Trace Crowe of the State Champion Easley High School boy’s Golf Team, finished 5th in the boys’ 15-18 age group, while Cayla Smith of Wren High School was the girls overall champion.
By taking home top honors this year, Smith became the first girls’ two-time winner since 1992.
“Local junior golf is outstanding. South Carolina, as a whole, is a leader in junior golf,” said Adam Relan, the PGA General Manager and Director of Golf at the club. “The caliber of local golfers, especially that of the Easley High School team is high, and they receive a great deal of support which enables them to succeed. The Smithfields family, and community support is huge.”
The Tournament was founded by Susie Thornton 21 years ago. Her son, Sean Thornton, won the first three tournaments while earning a golf scholarship to Clemson.
The tournament has also seen several other participants go on to be more successful in their golf careers.
Kyle Thompson, a two-time winner of the Upstate Junior Classic, grew up playing at the Smithfields Country Club in Easley before becoming an All-American at the University of South Carolina and a professional golfer on the PGA Tour.
