PICKENS COUNTY—Police are investigating a drowning that occurred at Gap Hill Landing on Monday morning.

Timothy J. Clayton, 36, was pronounced dead after being rushed to Cannon Memorial Hospital shortly after 8:00 a.m. He had apparently jumped off the dock while going for a swim.

Witnesses say they saw him go under.

“The witnesses stated that the gentleman was swimming by himself, and that he went down and didn’t resurface,” said Chuck Haynes, Director of Pickens County Emergency Management. “They made the call and attempted to rescue him, but could not find him.”

A diver from the Pickens County Dive team found him, and escorted him out of the water. At this time, police say, no foul play was involved.

“There was no foul play,” said Lieutenant Lane Byers of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. “Basically the guy was just there wanting to go for a swim and drowned.”

Byers says other factors could have played a role in the tragedy.

“He had been drinking sometime before he went swimming, but we don’t know how much yet,” said Byers.

The Sheriff’s office and the Pickens County Coroner are continuing their investigation.
