EASLEY—Five games are on tap for Friday’s third day of the Big League World Series, including a 4 p.m. match-up of the only teams that are 2-0 so far.
Friday’s play at the JB “Red” Owens Recreation Complex in Easley begins Italy playing Puerto Rico at 11 a.m. Both have scored nine runs in one game, tied for the most in any one game in the tournament. Italy, 1-1, lost to Venezuela, 5-3, Wednesday and defeated Canada 9-1 Thursday night. Puerto Rico, the automatic international qualifier this year, opened the tournament Wednesday with a 9-2 victory over the Philippines, the winner of the Asia/Pacific Region. Puerto Rico, 1-0, was off Thursday.
Two games are scheduled for 4 p.m. Indiana, the Central Region champion plays California, the winner of the West Region in a matchup of the only two 2-0 teams so far. Indiana defeated Florida, 3-1 Thursday and has only given up one run and three hits in its first two games. California defeated New Jersey, 2-1, Thursday night. In the other 4 p.m. game, Canada takes on Venezuela. Canada, 0-1, lost 9-1 to Italy in its first game Thursday night while Venezuela, 1-0, had the day off Thursday after defeating Italy, 5-3, Wednesday.
The last two games of the day are both set for 7:30 p.m. Texas, the Southwest champion, plays Florida. Texas had Thursday off after falling to California, 4-0 Wednesday , while Florida lost 3-1 to Indiana Thursday. In the other 7:30 p.m. game, New Jersey, 0-1, coming off a 2-1 loss to California in its opening game Thursday, faces the Easley-based host team, representing SC District 1. Easley, which had the day off Thursday, fell to Indiana, 1-0, despite a four-hit pitching performance by Daniel Nations.
