EASLEY—Puerto Rico dominated Venezuela on offense and defense, winning 13-0 at the Big League World Series Sunday night at the JB “Red” Owens Recreation Complex in Easley. The game was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.
Puerto Rico, which won the tournament championship in 2010 and finished second last year, has now outscored opponents 40-2 in the 2012 Big League World Series. The team has now gone the last 23 innings of the series without giving up a run.
The San Juan team, now 4-0, will play Venezuela, 3-1, again in the International semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Tuesday evening’s US semifinal in the championship game at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The title game will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.
Puerto Rico scored in five of the six innings of play while holding Venezuela scoreless. The first score came in the top of the first when Arnaldo Matos hit a solo home run to give Puerto Rico a 1-0 lead. Mikael Cintron hit home run in the second to go up 2-0.
Puerto Rico scored five more runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead over previously unbeaten Venezuela, the winners of the Latin America Region.
After going scoreless in the fifth, Puerto Rico took a 10-0 lead and then went to 12-0 on a two-run triple by Kevin Santa. Santa later scored to give Puerto Rico a 13-0 lead. The game was called after Venezuela failed to score in the bottom of the sixth.
EJ Lugo had two of Puerto Rico’s nine hits and also scored a run and had two RBI. Santa also had two RBI.
Puerto Rico’s Yadiel Cruz one of two Venezuela hits, struck out one and walked one in five innings.
