PICKENS—Authorities are learning more about the shooting incident in Pickens last Sunday night that left one man dead and a teen injured.
The Pickens Police Department was called to 213 Timber Drive at 11:15 PM in response to a report that a juvenile had been shot.
Pickens police believe a 16-year-old female had been shot by her father.
When police arrived on the scene, the teenage girl was found in the roadway down the street from the residence and was later transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder, according to Police Chief Rodney Gregory.
Officers believe, the father, Andrew John Kowszik, fired several other shots during the incident before locking himself inside the residence and refusing to respond to police.
No one else was injured.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was called in and made entry into the residence and found that Kowszic had locked himself in his bedroom and taken his own life with the same weapon.
“We tried to talk him out for over an hour but there was no response,” Gregory said. “We called the Pickens County SWAT team and they made entrance and found him dead of an apparent and self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It was just a family ordeal that turned bad. Mr. Kowszic shot his daughter and then later turned the gun on himself.”
The Pickens County Coroner has confirmed the apparent cause of death.
An autopsy has been performed on the body of 44-year-old Andrew Kowszic, but the coroner’s office will have to wait 6-8 weeks for the final autopsy and toxicology report.
Pickens Police have established that the weapon used in the incident was a .38 caliber revolver and that Kowszic shot his daughter while she was in the backyard.
The incident took place as friends of the girl were in the driveway of the Kowszic residence.
“The legal procedure for such a crime is to close it out because the defendant is deceased,” said Gregory.
Kowszic was divorced and the 16-year-old was living with him.
