Citizens with loved ones interred at the Westview Cemetery in Easley are concerned about what they see as neglect amongst the graves.

Some of the signs of neglect include the overgrowth of trees and shrubs, broken headstones, and an open grave.

Easley resident, Teresa Henry, was visiting the cemetery and took note of the disrepair and the open grave.

“As someone with family buried here, I’m disappointed by the disregard and the general maintenance of the cemetery. I understand the city feels it has limitations to its responsibility, but there comes a time where common sense should take over. There should be policies in place to address these types of issues,” said Henry.

The open grave is located near the center of the cemetery and is covered by a sheet of plywood.

“We were not aware of the open grave and we are going to address this issue right away,” said Easley City Administrator, Fox Simons.

According to the city, the maintenance of the cemetery is a two-way street with both the city and the family members of the buried providing the service.

“The families of the buried are supposed to maintain their plots and the city maintains the common areas like the walkway,” said Simons.
