Ashley and Alex Evans of Piedmont peruse gourds for sale along with pumpkins on South Pendleton Street in Easley Tuesday. Alex Evans is an Easley police officer. “We like the unique shapes and colors, and we prefer giving our money to a church,” Ashley Evans said. The pumpkin sale is part of a fundraiser by First United Methodist Church, Easley to help support the church’s Aldersgate House. The dwelling is used as a part of program to help get homeless people back on their feet, according to Alice Vander Linden, co-chair of the church’s mission organization. Vander Linden was working the display along with Faye Nashworthy. Vander Linden said the variety of gourds and pumpkins come from a Native American tribe. A portion of the sales proceeds also go to that group.
