EASLEY — The 2012-2013 Green Wave wrestling season is officially underway and entering its second week of scheduled competition with a winning record.

“Right now, we are excited about the season with everything that’s been going on and the way we have been performing. There will be a lot more victories this year. With our record being 4-2, we are very excited because we have never had a winning record like this before,” said head coach, Jeff Harris. “We have two 6-0 wrestlers, one is a freshman, Jordan Bakeman, and also James Fair, who is a senior for us.”

The Easley team has 24 high school wrestlers and eight wrestlers from Gettys Middle School.

“James Fair is in his third year wrestling and was one match away from making state last year. He beat some talented guys who went to state, and this year his goal is to place at state. We also have a couple other wrestlers who have experience,” Harris said. “We have Robbie Machamer who is a junior. His confidence is there, his moves are there, and he is turning it around. We have senior, Brandon Motz, and he is coming back and he is looking strong. We have some guys returning with experience.”

Unlike last year, Easley will not give up any free points due to the lack of a full roster.

“We are excited this year because we have a full roster and we are not giving up any free points, and when we start a match, it is 0-0 and not -24 to 0. We are starting on even ground.”

Since Harris became head coach, the Green Wave has experienced a steady increase in season wins.

“Well this year we are definitely hoping to have a winning record. Each year since I have been head coach, our win totals have been climbing. Last year, we had 14 wins, which was the highest total for some time in Easley. People now know that we are not just a door mat and that we come to wrestle,” Harris said.

The City of Easley now has a youth wrestling program called “Limitless Wrestling” for ages 7 to 11.

“With this new program called “Limitless Wrestling”, we have Hector Valentin running the program and recruiting at the elementary schools. We are trying to spread the word because we know that the youth program is going to be our feeder program and will be the future of Easley wrestling,” Harris said. “If we can get them starting younger, we will definitely be dominating this area.”
