PIEDMONT—The Wren High basketball team has struggled to build any kind of momentum heading into a crucial part of its regular season schedule.

The Hurricanes fell to undefeated T.L. Hanna before Christmas, and lost to Franklin Road Academy in the opening round of the Marlin Christmas Classic in Panama City Beach Florida.

Wren’s region schedule opened Wednesday night with a matchup against Daniel.

A matchup with Hanna on Dec. 21 saw the Hurricanes struggle to keep up with a fast-paced Yellow jacket offense in a 60-42 blowout.

Hanna stormed out of the gate, opening up a 36-25 halftime advantage. Wren began the second half with a four point third-quarter showing, which spelled the end for the Hurricanes. Yellow Jacket standout Jameel Taylor had a game-high 26 points, while adding eight rebounds and two assists.

Wren took a short break for the Christmas holiday before heading to Florida for a tournament just before region play opens.

The Hurricanes showcased one of their worst offensive stretches of the year during the second and third quarters of their 59-31 loss to Franklin Road Academy on Dec. 27. Wren put up a total of seven points in the two crucial quarters in route to its round one exit.

Despite the loss, Wren did see some positive basketball in Florida. The Hurricanes took down Arnold by a score of 54-43 on Friday, followed by a 65-57 win over Faith Academy on Saturday.

Finishing the holiday tournament fifth overall, Wren now looks towards a demanding region schedule with a matchup at West-Oak this Friday.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
