PICKENS — Drinking at after-prom parties can be tempting to teenagers.

To help young people understand the dangers of after-prom drinking, and underage drinking at all times, Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County and the Pickens County YMCA are teaming up to host a “Pre-Prom Party.”

The party will be held from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Saturday March 28, at the Pickens YMCA.

The event is absolutely free to Pickens County seniors and juniors who present a high school ID.

“We’ve been targeting underage drinking among our youth,” said Cathy Breazeale, BHS Director of Prevention. “We’ve received some monies from our state agency to get the word out there about underage drinking.”

The Pre-Prom Party is “a good way to bring as many high-schooler together as we can,” Breazeale said.

“It’s more economical than hosting an event for each high school’s prom,” she said. “It’s a better way to reach as many high-schoolers as we can.”

The event will feature alcohol awareness games, free food, a free movie, and a chance to swim in the Y’s pool, along with a short presentation about the dangers of underage drinking.

At the end of the event, students can choose to pledge to be alcohol-free on Prom Night and beyond.

Organizers will also deliver prom goodies along with the message about staying safe on Prom Night.

“We’ll have a free raffle, students can enter by putting their names in the hat,” Breazeale said. “We’ll be giving away hair products, tuxedo rentals, meals at restaurants, different things that are essential to having a great time at prom.”

Students can sign up to attend the event at their individual high schools, she said.

Other than swimming gear, attendees don’t need to bring anything to the event, Breazeale said.

Adult supervision will be provided at the event.
