EASLEY—When President Barack Obama gives his inaugural address on Monday, a few familiar faces will be in the crowd.

A group of Gettys Middle School students will be attending the inauguration in Washington D.C. this weekend, and sixth grade social studies teacher Tracee Simpson said it will be a trip to remember.

“I couldn’t think of anything more historical for these students to witness,” Simpson said. “It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The group, which consists of the history club at the middle school, had been discussing the idea for a while and was happy to see it come to fruition.

“We talked about this with parents several times during the summer,” Simpson said. “It actually worked out to where we could go. It is really exciting for these students.”

Simpson, along with other staff and chaperons, will accompany the students. She said the group plans to arrive on Saturday to do some sight seeing before the big day.

“The kids are really excited to see the monuments and things like that in Washington D.C.,” Simpson said. “It is going to be a special time.”

Simpson said Gettys Middle students have been on trips to D.C. before, but this is a first.

“We’ve been to D.C. before, but we’ve never had the opportunity to go to an inauguration,” Simpson said. “Everyone has gotten on board with the idea, and we’re excited that it’s almost here.”

The official swearing-in will be held on Sunday, but a public ceremony is set for Monday, Jan. 21.
