EASLEY — Jeannette Walters had directed a few plays in college, at her church and through other small venues, but she has never tackled a project like directing the Easley High School play.
So she was a bit overwhelmed when more than 60 students came out to audition for spots in “The Boyfriend.”
The large numbers turned out to be a good thing, as the play needs 32 cast members.
And the cast members who are in the play?
“They have just been wonderful,” Walters said. “Some have really gone above and beyond the call of duty. Not just being there for practice, but coming up to me and asking if they can do anything to help. Whether it be something as simple as running to get me a bottle of water, they’ve been willing to help.
“The Boyfriend” is a musical set in the 1920s, with a lot of zippy music that keeps the plot moving fast.
But the 1920s settings do create one problem.
“We’re need a little extra time for our girls to fix their hair in a 1920s style for each practice,” Walter said.
Walters said “The Boyfriend” is light-hearted and very upbeat and expects the audience to be tempted to dance along with some of the music.
The play opens Thursday at Scott Auditorim of Easley High School. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students and children. For tickets call 855-8180.
The play will have 7 p.m. performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, then wrap up with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee.
