EASLEY — More than 70 volunteers from St. Matthias Lutheran Church fanned out on a recent

Saturday to take part in nine distinct events serving the Easley/Liberty/Piedmont area.

These folks were taking part in an interdenominational church outreach program called INASMUCH.

The title is taken from a oft-quoted verse in the book of Matthew along the lines of, ”Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

The theme promotes the idea that focusing volunteer action on difficult community issues can produce surprising results.

INASMUCH is intended to motivate believers beyond the walls of their local church to minister to the human hurts and hopes of their broader community.

Project coordinator Mike Faulkner summed up the days effort by saying, “It is amazing how a simple act of kindness serving someone in need is magnified many times over when a concentrated volunteer effort produces results.”

Some of the projects the group tackled included:

• Holding a baby shower that provided gifts for crisis pregnancies at “Hope Woman’s Center”.

• Building a new deck and ramp for a homebound resident who was identified with the help of the local “Meals on Wheels” group.

• Bagging and loading donated clothing for “Home with a Heart,” a Christian based inpatient rehabilitation facility for men with addictions, located in Liberty.

• Delivering baked goods to two local fire stations and the Easley Police station to say thanks for all they do for our community.

• A youth group set up shop at an Ingles store to ask for donations of nonperishable food, from shoppers entering the store.

Shoppers responded big time which resulted in collecting more than a full-size pickup truck full of items that were given to Piedmont Emergency Relief Center (PERC), located in Piedmont.

It is an effort that Faulkner indicates will likely be repeated later in the year.

Pastor Alan Kinsey expressed appreciation to all involved and expressed pleasure with the resulting efforts “that reached many people in our community.”
